Computers in the Library

Computers are available from library opening at 9 a.m. until 15 minutes prior to closing, and can be reserved in one hour increments using PC Reservation software available at the Front Desk and Adult Service Desk. Reservations are first come, first serve, and a valid Metropolitan Library System library card is required for access.
Children:
Library policy regarding Children's computer usage:
- Children ages 10-17 require a signed parental authorization to access electronic resources.
- Children up to 9 years of age require direct parent or guardian supervision while using the computers and/or Internet.
We have computers in four areas of the library: the Main Room, the Computer Lab, the Career Center located on the second floor and the Youth Services Department. There are six Main Room computers that are available to all patrons and are equipped with USB flash drive hubs and a laser printer. These computers are suitable for group projects as more than one user is allowed on a single machine at a time.
Computer Lab:
Our Library Computer Lab is a quiet zone for patrons who wish to work individually and in a more peaceful, private setting. The lab has nine computers, all with USB flash drive hubs, and there is a policy of one patron per machine.

WI-FI
The Stickney-Forest View Public Library offers wireless Internet access! Patrons with personal laptops and other mobile devices can access this connection. Access is available in all public areas of the Library.
What do I need to access the wireless connection?
To access the Library's wireless network, you need a laptop (or suitable PDA or other portable device) equipped with an 801.11b/g compatible wireless card. Some portable devices have wireless cards built-in, while others may require you to purchase a compatible card to plug into it.
Installation of the card and its associated software will vary depending on the specific device, card and operating system. Library staff cannot assist you in making changes to the device's network settings or hardware configuration, nor can the Library provide network cards for your use.
Is the wireless connection secured?
Wireless communications are not secure. Informed, cautious wireless users will avoid transmitting credit card or other sensitive personal information through wireless connections. All users of wireless should have up-to-date virus protection on their laptop computers or wireless devices to assist in protecting them from harm.
What if I have problems? Can Library staff assist?
Library staff cannot provide any technical assistance in configuring your portable device or troubleshooting wireless access problems. There is no guarantee that your wireless device will work with the network.
Wireless access is unsecured.
