LifeLong Access at the Library
Learning all Your Life

Our library was one of several libraries to receive an EqualAccess grant of $5000 last year.  The grant we chose was for serving people who are 50+, for Lifelong Access.  This theme recognizes the fact that the library is a source of information and learning well beyond the school years.  People’s minds remain active throughout life, and often, people welcome the opportunity to  learn and share  with others.

The funds are administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, with funding coming from LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act), a Federal source of library funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  EqualAccess Libraries™ is a professional development program sponsored by Libraries for the Future (LFF), a non-profit organization that has since ceased operation.

The grant is designed to provide materials such as large print books, audiobooks, and DVDs; equipment (in our case, a projector); miscellaneous expenses; and program expenses.  We are required to supplement the grant with local funding.  Fortunately, with the Martha Kobayashi Fund and the recent Elizabeth Benoit gift, we will be able to provide the additional funding and carry some programs beyond the grant year.

In the course of outlining our grant proposal, we held two focus groups and gathered surveys about program interests.  As a result, we have started planning programs, as listed below.  If you have ideas for additional programs, or would like to be on a mailing list for the programs, please contact the Library Director, Jean Langley, at 508 393-5025 or jlangley@town.northborough.ma.us
