"The garden is a home's most important room." Cornish resident Charles A. Platt (1861-1933), architect, artist, and landscape designer, practiced what he preached. A jump ahead of Edith Wharton and Maxfield Parrish in admiration of these gardens, Platt photgraphed and applied Italian desgn principles for villas and gardens so that Americans could follow them. A PowerPoint presentation describes and illustrates Italian gardens as Platt photographed them in 1894. Rephotographed in a pilgramage a century later, we'll explore what these gardens  look like today, from the vantage point, and discuss the history of designed spaces.

By the late 1800s , the orginal paddle steamer Mount Washington was transporting 60,000 passengers each season. The "Old Mount" graced the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee  for 67 years before being destroyed by fire in 1939.  Its replacement, the S.S. Mount Washington, made its maiden voyage the following August. But America's involvement in WWII saw the removal of its engine for use in the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter.
