Children's Services Library Assistant
Full Time

Hours: 40 hours/week

Do you have a passion for working with children (ages 0 to 12) and their caregivers?  Can you occasionally sip pretend tea with a smile? Are you faster than a speeding toddler?  More powerful than writer's block at a newsletter's deadline? Able to leap over a programming obstacle at a single bound?  Are you patient, imaginative and energetic, and familiar with children’s literature?  Do you know the correct order of the Harry Potter books by heart?  Can you complete the following phrase without Googling? “One fish, two fish, red fish, ________” ?

If you answered an enthusiastic “Yes!” to all these questions and meet the criteria below, this job is for you!  We have an opening for a full-time Children’s Services Library Assistant at the Dundee Library location of the Fox River Valley Public Library District (FRVPLD). FRVPLD serves 70,000 residents in northeastern Kane County, Illinois.  Our growing, culturally diverse district along the Rt. 90 corridor straddles the Fox River and includes the communities of East and West Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, and Gilberts along with parts of Algonquin, Barrington Hills, and Elgin.

Job requirements and functions include:

·         Recommending books and other materials for children and their caregivers

·         Planning and executing programs for various age groups with energy, passion, and a side of silly

·         Finding that elusive "red book" that was about a girl and had a dog in it

·         Bachelor’s degree or two years public library experience required

·         Ability to write and speak fluently in both English and Spanish strongly preferred

This is a 40 hour per week, benefitted position. Starting hourly rate is $14.65 per hour. Work schedule will include a mix of daytime, evenings and weekends.

The next Assistant Director of Public Services at the Fox River Valley Libraries will shape the future of library services and help design expanded facilities to serve our growing population.

Fox River Valley Public Library District (FRVPLD) serves 70,000 residents in northeastern Kane County, Illinois. Our growing, culturally diverse district along the Rt. 90 corridor straddles the Fox River and includes the communities of East and West Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, and Gilberts along with parts of Algonquin, Barrington Hills, and Elgin. Publically supported library service dates back to 1876 in this area. Family-friendly neighborhoods abound; some steeped in history, others newer and still growing. Several vibrant business districts provide plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping for families and singles alike. The library district is in the midst of developing plans for new and renovated buildings on both the east and west sides of our service area.

The Assistant Director of Public Services will participate extensively in system-wide initiatives, represent the Library to the public, and lead efforts to create excellent and engaging experiences through the design and delivery of outstanding public services.

The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking and dynamic peak performer. As part of the Executive Leadership team, this position plans, directs and organizes all library public services, coordinates service activities, and oversees public services at our two libraries. The ideal candidate will have a proven history of team-building and creating an environment supportive of innovation – a leader with enthusiasm, patience, determination and a sense of humor.
