Ruth M. Wendt Gallery Wall
June-mid July 2010 Art Display by Robert DiNello

Robert DiNelloIn a pleasing combination of words and photography, DiNello not only captures vibrant images such as knobby pumpkins, bulbous hot air balloons, and gnarled pipes, but complements them with words that bring them to life.

DiNello became interested in photography about six years ago, and as a mechanical design engineer, the combination of art and technology involved in photography appealed to both his creative and technical sides.

The poetry that appears with the images was written by DiNello himself and was inspired by the photographs, which came first.

“I was evaluating why certain images appeal to me more than others, and as an exercise I began to write down what I thought as I looked at certain photos. The words often revealed a phrase or an idea that had a very strong link to the image. I really began to enjoy the process and repeated it for the images on display. I’ve never studied poetry writing, but I’ve always enjoyed reading, and I like how poetry distills thoughts and ideas to the essentials,” said DiNello.

DiNello usually has his camera with him to capture what catches his eye and is really hoping for “that UFO moment.” He also likes to plan trips to specific places and events with photography in mind. He shoots all digital RAW files and uses Canon software and Photoshop for post-processing.

“I’m still very much an amateur, but I like to think both the words and the images I combined are strengthened by one another. I plan on continuing to refine both,” said DiNello.

The DiNello pieces in the Ruth Wendt Gallery can be purchased through the artist. To contact him, you can send him an email .

The Ruth Wendt Gallery was established in honor of Ruth Miller Wendt (1905-1968), a book-loving member of the Dundee Township Community who served on the library’s board of directors from 1937 until 1963.

Rebekah Meier
For the past 20 years Ms. Meier has professionally established herself as an author, designer, and artist in both the craft and quilt industries. Her designs have been featured in numerous publications. She writes a column in “Create and Decorate” magazine and is a regular contributor to "Crafts n Things" magazine. She teaches her technique in classes and workshops across the country, and will be featured on the PBS television show “Scrapbook Memories” early this summer.

The work on display here is mixed media fabric art. It is the combination of many different materials such as fabric, felt, paper, batting, yarn, acrylic paint, ink, buttons, beads and much more. Meier also likes to use what is already on hand at home, and you can often find recycled materials in her work such as candy wrappers, newspaper, dryer sheets, and plastic bags. “I have always loved the freedom of collage. I like to use traditional things in alternative ways,” explained Meier.

Special note: Artist Rebekah Meier will present a “Fabric Art Collage Workshop” here at the Dundee Library on Saturday, August 14 at 2 p.m. Participants will create a unique material made with gift tissue, paint, and ink and then use the creation to make cards, postcards, and tags. February 2010 Art Display by Larry Pepper of East Dundee
Larry Pepper

Mr. Pepper is a resident of East Dundee, IL. His photography is a unique combination of nature, patterns, and textures that at first glance seem abstract. Upon closer inspection, viewers will be delighted to find things like birds in flight and railroad tracks within swirls of vibrant colors and metallic sheens.

Pepper purchased his first camera in 1980 to take with and capture Alaska during a brief move. In 2005, he began incorporating his artistic inspirations. He uses Adobe Photoshop to create his art.

“I carry a camera and take photos wherever they strike me to use later. The digital images go into Photoshop where I blend, mix, and tweak them until I get something I like,” said Pepper. He then sends them to a professional service lab in Iowa for printing.

Pepper is owner of Pepper Photography in East Dundee, where he offers digital photographic restoration and archiving services.

Special note: Larry Pepper presented the program “Digital Image Restoration” at the library on Wednesday, February 10 at 7 p.m.

Pepper’s photographs are available for purchase. For information, please contact the artist at (847) 426-7377 or visit his web site.

January 2010 Art Display by Nannette Turetgen of Gilberts
Nannette Turetgen

Take a break from the biting wind and snow and stroll down the Ruth M. Wendt Gallery Hall at the Library. Tropical breezes, swaying palm trees, and crashing waves await as you are transported to Hawaii via the paintings of artist Nannette Turetgen of Gilberts. Turetgen’s current work is done in watercolors, and those selected for this collection showcase the natural landscapes of one of the world’s most beautiful places with bright colors, playful lines, and tranquil vistas.
All were painted “en plein air.” All are original works, not prints, done on-site at the actual scene of the painting, as the wind is blowing, waves are splashing, and the sun is changing.
“I like the excitement of playing with the colors. It is a challenge. One little touch can mean something, and once it’s there, you can’t change it. I strive to incorporate my love of dance and movement, color, and the world’s beauty,” said Turetgen.

The Turetgen paintings in the Ruth M. Wendt Gallery can be purchased through the artist for $30 each. To contact her, call (847) 888-2344 or send an email.
